Husk Cane Drone Reeds are made from the hardest Spanish cane available. Cane is available from several different regions of the world; Spain, France, Australia and elsewhere. The cane from each of these areas has it's own characteristics. Spanish cane is the absolute best for drone reeds because of the hardness. Hard cane provides a bright vibrant sound and is very resistant to moisture. The harder the cane is the tighter the fibers are compacted, thus they swell less with the addition of moisture. This means a more stable reed that resists changes in pitch while playing. Softer cane drone reeds can sound dull and will have large swings in pitch as the reed takes on moisture. Husk Reeds strives to eliminate this problem by using the hardest cane available, thus ensuring that your pipe will stay pitch perfect for the duration of your longest Piobaireachd.
Husk Reeds are made to a very high standard. There will be no stray cane fibers (hairs) under the tongues in the reed bed. My bridles are tied the old fashioned way with real Thermowaxed hemp, thus you will never have to retie a bridle because one came loose. The sealing wax at the tip is of the highest quality and will never go brittle and chip off. Husk Cane Drone Reeds are finished, no need to "remake" them after you recieve them.
I use thin diameter cane for my tenor reeds to match today's modern pitch. They are thin enough that you will have a huge degree of pitch adjustment because you'll be able to seat them as far into the reed seat as needed. Whether you're playing for a Highland Games, a céilidh or for the opening of a new casino resort or town hall, these reeds will fit the bill. Versatility like this means that players with a variety of styles will enjoy playing with them.
